How It Works

Tips on Building a Wall - Noel Marshall

·         Calculate your wall dimensions to full or half sized bricks/blocks. Avoids unnecessary cutting.

·         Lay out brick heaps and mortar spot boards every 2 meters apart to have bricks and mortar in reach at all times. Use our latex brick laying gloves to protect your hands.

·         Very Important; Splash down bricks/ blocks to saturate them with water but leave to surface dry before placement. (Dry bricks absorb the moisture from the mortar, this then forces the mortar to dry out almost immediately which leaves weak brittle joints.) Rule Of Thumb - Mortar joints should remain malleable to touch 1 hour after brick placement. When working with very porous materials such as Aircrete/ lightweight block brush PVA adhesive (polybond) onto the joint surfaces before placement.

·         Mortar Mix - 6 part building sand, 1 part cement & 1 part hydrated lime, add water with plasticiser or PVA adhesive mixed 5:1 in the water. (Never use washing up liquid)

·         Measure your brick spacing using our brick tape to 215mm brick 10mm joints (half bricks 102.5mm) accurately on the first 2 courses and ensure your joints are on bond - lined up on each course as you progress. For larger projects use our Marshall Profiles to assure absolute precision.

·         The natural colour of mortar can look quite bland. It's common for brick walls to add a mortar dye in the mix to enhance the appearance. (Black dye is most common but I use just half the recommended amount, this leaves a grey joint as opposed to stark black, white mortar/ joint is my most favored but this requires white sand and white cement making it quite expensive).

·         Point your joints after the mortar has started to set so any excess falls away crisp and clean. (1 - 4 hours after placement).

·         Keep your tools reasonably clean as you work and clean well at the end of each day.

Noel Marshall was born on 6th May 1975. He grew up on a small farm near Ballygarvan county Cork, Noel is the 2nd from a family of 5 children their childhood was a far cry from the play station age that has engulfed our current generation. From the age of 5 or 6 before school he would be out at 6am helping with the work around the farm these jobs included milking cows by hand, rearing calves, pigs and hens. With chores done by 8am Noel his older brother and three younger sisters walked 2 miles to their local school. His father combined the farm work with holding down a full time job as a builder with the county council.

Noels creativity was evident from an early age often making his own toys from wood and always engrossed during construction work conducted on the farm. At school he only engaged on practical subjects but excelled in these. From age 11 he worked during the summer holidays at a concrete paving yard producing slabs and laying patios, cycled 6 miles to and from each day starting work at 8am. His senior colleagues were astonished at the kid’s ability to work; Victor Kelly his boss as this time remarked.

Noel Left School before his final year and joined the Irish army as an apprentice carpenter, while excelling at the carpentry he struggled with conforming to the other facets of army life. Geared for productivity, spending days preparing for inspections frustrated him greatly. This lead him to take up endurance running where he also excelled, going on to represent Ireland at international level he trained hard with aspirations to qualify for the 2004 Olympic marathon however the combination of consistent injury and overtraining eventually ended the quest - PB’s include 24:58 for 5 miles and 51:32 for 10 miles.

I became plagued with injury and eventually burned out from a period of over training as I pushed to hit that exceptional Olympic standard. Noel left the army 6 months after producing the first Bricky prototype. He raised funding of €650K from 25 local investors for production and marketing. Bricky is now considered the most successful hand tool invented this turn of the century. The Masons Mate and Pro-pointer were later additions to the portfolio. Commercial User

When installing paving Gapfast will add significantly to the structural integrity of the specified design. By using Gapfast the landscape architect/civil engineer does not have to rely alone on the horizontal bond strength between the paving unit and the bedding mortar. Similarly little requirement is placed on the pointing medium itself (which frequently fails). A flagged paving system incorporating Gapfast will allow the entire paved area to act almost as a monolithic (but flexible) construction.

The horizontal loads placed by vehicular braking and acceleration forces are considerable, similarly rotational loading brought about by power steering of stationary commercial vehicles is again significant. By using Gapfast, these stresses are distributed throughout the entire paved area, rather than relying on the individual paving slabs.

Pavers Mate was designed to make the perfect bed every time for domestic block paving and smaller commercial area jobs where using just the sand screed.

Pavers Mate is also designed aid in the laying of calibrated paving slabs using a cement screed.

When laying paving on a cement screed it does not matter about the area as you lay one paver at a time, which means that you can lay any size area with the Pavers Mate.

Pavers Mate was designed to be simple to use. I wanted to make what is normally a skilful task easy. So easy that in fact anyone could use it.

Pavers Mate has a 930mm Polypropylene screed, this is designed to this length as the largest paver you are likely to lay is a 900mm. The extra 30mm of the tool is the overrun ensuring the paver you are laying has a full bed and make it easier when you screed again for your next paver.

The screed is adjustable by sliding up or down to the required depth following the measuring increments on the back of the screed to set to the correct depth and hand tightening the wing knobs/ adjusters to clamp it into place. Once you have done this simply place the ware plate end of the level on your datum paver (i.e. the first one that you have set your falls to) and keeping good pressure against the paver and no pressure on the other end drag across the surface to create the perfect bed every time keeping an eye on the bubble as you do as you. This tool eliminates rocking pavers and lessens breakages which you normally get with uneven beds, it also saves time which in turn saves you money.

Tite Tie is a patented tool that creates tension on a line and has various uses such as
enhancing the control of cargo during transport. It is designed to work with the most common
rope sizes as well as webbing, and it has the same mechanical advantage as a Trucker’s Knot,
only without all the knots. Its quick and easy to use, has no moving parts, and has a load
capacity of 900kgs making it one of the strongest tie downs on the market. The Tite Tie cannot be
beaten on simplicity, reliability, versatility and value for money.

How it Works
When tension is applied to the rope or webbing the Tite-Tie's patented Press-n-Grip
3V Design does its work. What makes the Press-n-Grip 3V Design so special is that two results are
created from one action. Firstly, a gripping effect is created on the three Vs holding the Tite-Tie on
the rope stopping it from slipping or sliding down. Secondly, at the same time the rope or webbing
squeezes the two Tite-Tie pieces together creating gripping force on the lower hooks.

It is also worth noting at this point that the Tite-Tie is securely attached to the rope or webbing and
no matter how much tension or shaking to the rope or webbing, the Tite-Tie will not fall off.
Also note that the force on the rope or webbing is centered with the Tite-Tie, so there's no twisting

When the rope or webbing is placed between the two lower hooks, the force on the lower hooks

SEAL RITE - THE PERFECT SEAL EVERYTIME

Silicone sealant is the most commonly used product for sealing corners on tiled areas, around showers, baths & basins, around worktops, wall & floor joints, door & window frames. However, the application of silicone sealant usually requires a relatively high level of skill to achieve a consistent quality of finish. If applied incorrectly the joint will look poor and waterproofing may be compromised.

Seal Rite – The New Sealant Masking System from Everbuild Building Products is a dispenser and micro-fine foil masking tape which enables both Tradesmen and DIY’ers to achieve a perfectly finished joint every time, without any level of skill, eliminating both mess and wastage. This new system is designed particularly with corner joints in bathroom/kitchen applications in mind, but equally it can also be used in various other areas.

The unique adjustable dispenser, which has a patent pending, allows the joint width to be adjusted using the outer wheel of the product – both of these outer sides move simultaneously so that when applied the tape is positioned offset from the wall by the chosen number of millimetres. There are six joint size options ranging from 4mm to 9mm (in 1mm increments).

Once the joint size has been selected it is easy to run the dispenser down one side of the corner joint, nipping off the tape when the bottom is reached, with the handy cutting blade built into the dispenser. The same is then repeated on the adjoining wall to create the parallel lines to apply the sealant. Once this has been done, the Everbuild Smooth-Out Tool should be used to smooth down the joint before the tape is pulled off leaving The Perfect Seal Everytime.

Installation Requirements

Prepare existing wall by removing any rendered or pebble dashed finishing to ensure the wall starter has direct contact with existing masonry.
Offer the lower section of the wall starter channel to the existing wall at the centre point of the new masonry.
Plumb the lower connector channel marking the position of the fixing holes, these should be equally spaced avoiding mortar joints.
Drill and plug existing masonry using a 10mm masonry drill.
Lightly clamp lower section at the 2 lower fixing points using the coach screws and washers provided.
Slot the upper section of wall starter channel into the lower section so that both end fixing slots overlap.
Drill and plug remaining fixing points into existing masonry using a 10mm masonry drill.
Lightly clamp upper section at the 2 upper and overlap fixing points using the coach screws and washers provided.
Align both connectors and tighten all coach screws (do not over tighten).
Lay brick or block work for the new wall in the conventional way leaving a full vertical mortar joint between the new and old walls. Install wall starter ties into the wall starter channel by twisting and sliding into position at 300mm centres The ties should be completely surrounded with mortar.

PLEASE NOTE
In cavity wall construction each leaf requires a wall starter kit.
For external walls proceed as per fixing instructions, but ensure the bottom edge of the wall starter channel is above the damp proof course. The vertical joint between old and new walls must be weather sealed.

It requires no adhesive pads, suction or mechanical device to hold it in place making it simpler to use.

There are clear advantages in using a guide plate that combines non-stick gel pads and friction compared to adhesive, mechanical and suction devices. To use the guide simply and quickly attach to a material, use for purpose, then rapidly detach and use again and again.

The guide plate has pads that grip dirty, wet, rough and uneven surface and it can flex to grip curved shapes.
Grip is adjustable. Control it by increasing or decreasing pressure to suit different surfaces.
Gel pads are reusable allowing the guide to be used many times unlike sticky pads which lose adhesive and must be replaced.
Upon removal it leaves no residue, or glue marks, rim marks, or suction damage.

Caution: Do not confuse our tile drills with "brick drills". Brick drills (see an example below) might appear "beefier" because there is more metal - but to drill tiles you actually want less metal and more diamond. Our crowns are made of ultra thin metal with maximum diamond. Remember its diamond doing the work not metal. Metal actually gets in the way so gets hot. When it gets hot it releases the diamonds.

Examine the diamond drill with the green tick. This is our own porcelain tile drill placed next to a brick drill and can be identified because it has an ultra thin wall design to penetrate hard material. In contrast the sturdier looking drills have more metal surface area but hold less diamond. We are often asked by customers to supply thicker drills for porcelain work. But chunky drills with low diamond content do not work in porcelain, granite or glass - only bricks. There are drills for porcelain made with more metal but they have a higher diamond content and cost many hundreds of pounds. The trend continues for good quality well designed tiles. Bigger tiles are now widely accepted and tile showrooms have noted customer demand for luxury "hotel quality" type of installation. Here comes the science bit !

Don't bother trying to use anything made of carbide or like this on the right. You will waste your time, effort and money.

Tiles produced today are much harder than this tool can cope with which is why you need a diamond hole cutter.

Materials are now "Class 5" on the Mohs scale. Our diamonds are "Class 10".

Diamond drills are used on glass, stained glass, ceramics, ceramic tile, porcelain, porcelain tile, limestone, marble, granite, slate, stone and fiberglass. Drills used on wood or metal have a sharp metal tip or teeth, that cut into the material. These types of drills do not work on glass, marble, etc. as the tips do not "bite" into the extremely hard material, and cause heat buildup that burn up the bit and cause "heat fractures" in the material. Carbide tipped Spear Point drills are sometimes used on the "softer" types of hard materials - like untempered glass, sandstone and marble and some of the less hard ceramic and porcelain tiles. While they sometimes work, they tend to chip the hard surface very badly, leaving a rough hole and often cause breakage due to fractures from the chipping and heat. Diamond drill bits are designed differently - they have diamond tips that "grind" into the extremely hard materials.

Core drills only drill out a portion of the resulting hole, so they tend to drill much faster than blunt nose drills. Core drills can be used to drill large holes and can be used on most nonferrous hard materials such as glass, stained glass, ceramic, porcelain and fiberglass, ceramic or porcelain tile, limestone, slate, marble, granite and other stone materials. Bonded diamond drill bits have the diamonds bonded to the the edges of the drill bit tip, generally using an electroplate bonding process. These drill bits are generally slow-speed bits and are fairly inexpensive. During use, the diamonds eventually wear off of the bit due to the hardness and abrasives of the material being drilled. Bonded diamond drill bits must not be used on metal, concrete, or masonry and require proper speed and adequate water lubrication.

The life of any type of diamond drill bit depends upon the hardness, abrasiveness and thickness of the material being drilled and the specific drilling techniques used (drill speed, pressure and lubrication), however, the diamonds of a drill bit don't actually wear out as much as they wear off due to heat and friction caused by the extreme hardness and abrasiveness of the material drilled. Drilling in glass, ceramic, marble, etc. is a slow process compared to softer materials such as wood or even metal. A fairly deep hole can be drilled in wood in just a few seconds, while it can take 20 or 30 seconds or longer to drill a hole in standard 1/8" thick glass. In some very hard stones and tiles, it may take 2 to 3 minutes to drill only 1/4" deep. Using diamond bits to drill in hard materials is not difficult, however, it takes time. A person should consider that they aren't 'drilling' a hole, as much as 'grinding' a hole.
